Disability and health (World Health Organisation)

Key facts

  • Over a billion people, about 15% of the world's population, have some form of disability.
  • Between 110 million and 190 million people have significant difficulties in functioning.
  • Rates of disability are increasing due to population ageing and increases in chronic health conditions, among other causes.
  • People with disabilities have less access to health care services and therefore experience unmet health care needs.

Disability and health

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) defines disability as an umbrella term for impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions. Disability is the interaction between individuals with a health condition (e.g. cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and depression) and personal and environmental factors (e.g. negative attitudes, inaccessible transportation and public buildings, and limited social supports).

Heart failure claims over diabetes drugs

Two widely-used drugs for diabetes are under the spotlight, with claims in a British journal that they double the risk of heart failure in patients.

The active ingredients are rosiglitazone, which is in the drug Avandia, and pioglitazone, which is in Actos. Both are available in Ireland.

The Irish Medicines Board says it is re-evaluating the two drugs. It is carrying out a review in association with a committee of the European Medicines Agency (EMEA). The results should  be available by October.

Health Boards

Health boards are responsible for administering health services in Ireland. There are currently ten health boards established: three area health boards located in the eastern region under the guidance of the Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA) and seven regional health boards covering the rest of the country. Each health board is responsible for the provision of health and social services in its area.

Aspirin may prolong life of prostate cancer...

Taking aspirin has been linked with a lower risk of death from prostate cancer, especially in men with disease, according to a new study from the US.

According to researchers, men who have been treated for prostate cancer, either with surgery or radiation, could benefit from taking aspirin regularly.

Previous studies have shown that aspirin may inhibit cancer growth and metastasis.

This most recent study looked at almost 6,000 men with prostate cancer, who had been treated with surgery or radiotherapy.

Chronic stress linked to high risk of stroke

Chronic stress, prompted by major life stressors, is linked to a high risk of stroke, according to new research.

Chronic stress, manifested as physical or mental symptoms in response to stressors lasting longer than six months has previously been linked to a heightened risk of heart disease. But its impact on the risk of stroke has not been clear.

A research team studied 150 adults, with an average age of 54, who had been admitted to one stroke unit. They also studied 300 healthy people of a similar age who lived in the same neighbourhood.
